Robin: depends on your size requirements. ballpark rule of thumb is n-drives * 150MB/s gives you the total read speed. write speed depends, and can be the same as read speed, but can be as low as single drive speed. so either 4, 6, 8 or 12 drives. you can substitute some of the drive bays with SSD, and get a tiered storage system within the NAS.
individual drive size and number depends on your budget depend on your budget, but I would start as high as you can afford, and opt for "red" drives (optimized for server and NAS usage). they cost more, but work better in that environment.
if you have computer with 10gigE capability, get a NAS that has it build in, or has a pcie slot to drop a 10gigE card in. 10gigE will allow you to get up to 1000MegaByte/sec R/W. standard ethernet (1gigE), incl wifi, will be limited to 100MegaByte/sec.
every NAS can do automatic backups to the cloud or another NAS, or an external USB (RAID) drive for backup.
