Io Capitano, co-written and directed by Matteo Garrone, is the harrowing tale of African migration through the lens of a 16-year old Senegalese boy (Seydou Sarr). Well made, well written and well acted, this film is deserving of all the accolades it has received.

Speaking of Seydou, Sarr is excellent. He picked up the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival for his acting performance and it’s well deserved. He’s great at balancing his character’s spirit that never breaks along with his fears that threaten it. I especially love him in the final half hour of the film.
This is an important one. I’m glad its recent Oscar nomination will undoubtedly get it the additional exposure it deserves.
