"Monster Hunter World has again encountered severe launch issues with the newest expansion. Tons of people with high end PCs are reporting the game as unplayable after the Iceborne update.

The issue is worsened by the fact the update is applied whether or not you own Iceborne, so anyone who owns the base game may find they are currently no longer able to play the game they own.

"According to Steam discussions, if the game doesn't find your save, it's possible to get it from the Cloud, but if you make a new one, it might overwrite your previous save. Don't be fooled just because it says "Do you want to make new data for Iceborne"

"This is supposedly an issue with save files that haven't been used for a while. I haven't played since late 2018, and apparently that makes the save files not compatible anymore, causing Iceborne to prompt you to overwrite it. Hopefully they will fix the incompatibility, but if you overwrite the save file, it will be a lot harder."

"Others think the error occurs if you haven’t played Monster Hunter World in a while, which means you missed out on a save data format change that took place post launch. Seeing as the game can’t read the old format, it suggest starting over, which obviously isn’t ideal.

The issue is widespread enough, with plenty of posts on Steam forums, Resetera and more on Reddit, all frustrated that hours of game are gone.

If you’ve yet to launch the game since Iceborne’s release, you may want to back up your save file locally just in case. Monster Hunter World typically stores those files under Steam\User data\(your steam user ID number)\582010. You should also back up everything in the savedata_backup folder in the game’s directory.
