For some reason I don't have as much of a problem with whatever arbitrary number a review site gives a game as long as the content of the review is useful. The number is the only thing big companies care about. You can't really build a good reputation if you're blacklisted.
This seems like a clever way for review sites to have their cake eat it too. The only people who lose out in this situation are people who base their purchases on those arbitrary numbers rather than the content of the review. That might hurt mainstream sales in the long term as more people lose faith in the rating system and decide not to buy anything when they realize they can't make an informed decision easily (because reading an entire review takes so much effort).
