Astalon: solid metroidvania, but didn't enjoy it as much as other people here. I found the structure (spawning at the castle's entrance after every death, very rare healing items) to be very frustrating at times and the main thing that stuck to my memory is having to backtrack through >20 rooms only to die over and over again at the same spots 2. Last Campfire: cute puzzle game 3. Banjo Kazooie: first time I properly played it. Was surprised by how tight the level design is given the oversprawling reputation Rare's N64 library has these days. Holds up very well. 4. Pokemon Legends: Arceus: first Pokemon game I actually enjoyed in 20 years. Simple, but very fun and tight gameplay loop. Other than that rather barebones. Had the potential to be amazing, is instead just good to great. 5. Elden Ring: it's what my child brain imagined games of the future to be like: seemingly endless scope, a world that stays mysterious even dozens of hours in and that always has a new surprise hidden somewhere. One of my favorite games of all time, no lie. 6. Bloodborne: Was my first Souls-like back in the day and it's fun to contrast my replay with my first playthrough. Back then it felt extremely intimidating and incredibly difficult, but now I pretty much rushed through it no problem, even found it pretty easy. The effect of experience. (was a complete new playthrough, no NG+) 7. Dark Souls 3: another replay, also great 8. Neon White: biggest surprise of the year? incredibly fun time trial highscore platformer, fantastically designed. 9. Kirby and the Forgotten Lands: I give Kirby games another chance every now and then but despite loving platformers they never quite click with me. Kirby's first 3D outing was ... no exception, sadly. 10. Live a Live: delightful game. the different scenarios always put a new spin on the gameplay, know to surprise and (almost) never overstay their welcome. 11. Xenoblade 3: definitely in my top 3 Xenoblades (not in a negative way, I just enjoyed them all a lot for different reasons lol) 12. Splatoon 3: didn't think a barely upgraded sequel would hook me again, but suddenly I spent another 80 hours... 13. DioField Chronicle: flawed in a lot of ways, but I enjoyed it a lot regardless 14. I was a Teenage Exocolonist: cute :3 15. Bayonetta 3: kinda messy, but still a lot of great fun 16. Harvestella: maybe the actual biggest surprise of the year? went in not expecting anything much and got surprised by another delightful, well written, pretty traditional RPG 17. Doom (original): first time playing it, holds up great, loads of fun 18. Panzer Dragoon Remake: cool art design, gameplay is whatever to me, gave me mild motion sickness. it's okay. 19. Lunistice: solidly designed 3d platformer, but I always end up feeling largely indifferent to these super short games 20. Tactics Ogre: still amazing 21. Ender Lilies: also amazing 22. Resident Evil 3 Remake: probably would have been disappointed if I paid full price for it (feels too much like an expansion to RE2:R, Nemesis has been degraded to a joke, the cut content is frustrating), but I got it gifted and it made for a weekend of quick, great fun. |
